Creating a Better New World - Planet, People, Policy

April 26th, 2023

The Better New World goal is simple - to be a business that continues growing but does so in a way that protects and respects both the natural environment and our local communities.

NWTC has always had plans and activities around environmental (Planet), societal (People) and governance (Policy) and it is time that we scale up what we are doing to deliver more ambitious targets at a greater pace and with greater investment than ever before. We’re not expecting to become perfect overnight, not even within the next year – we are looking to make small but impactful changes to be better each day.

Within Better New World there are many different types of activities, targets and projects. That fall under one of these categories – Planet, People and Policy. To provide focus to this mission, we have aligned each category with a UN Sustainable Development Goal (read more about sustainable development goals here).

Planet Sustainable Development Goal: Responsible Consumption & Production
What does it mean?:  Being more efficient in our energy use & increasing our usage of green electricity to 100% Building awareness and transparency around the products we source and where they come from.  Engaging with our suppliers to enable them to do better Improve waste management, specifically through stock, bins & procedures for separation of recyclable waste Working on trials of new and existing carbon reduction technologies Minimising business travel through better use of technology and greener modes of transport

NET ZERO by 2045
Our ultimate planet goal is to reach Net zero - this means reducing our carbon emissions to the lowest possible amount and investing in ‘carbon capture’ projects that restore the natural environment such as restoring native woodland or providing financial support to farms using regenerative agriculture practices. This investment will only offset the carbon emissions that are impossible to eliminate. This is a complicated, long-term goal so we have a specific plan to meet it. Focusing on responsible consumption and production is the first step on that journey to Net Zero.

People Sustainable Development Goal: Good Health and Wellbeing
What does it mean?:  Reducing unnecessary salt, fat and sugar content in our main dishes Offering healthy and executable meal options to our teams while on shift Increasing awareness around our employee assistance programme with Hospitality Action and other support channels. Reviewing working hours and conditions of all team members to ensure they are conducive to good health and wellbeing Development of an ambitious charity programme to raise money for causes that are important to our guests and teams

MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR OUR TEAMS
Mental health affects everyone and has proven to be incredibly important to our teams and guests. With around 1 in 4 people within the hospitality industry experiencing poor mental health each year it is important now more than ever that we support our teams in their mental health. We are committed to training at least 10% of our teams in Mental Health First Aid by the end of the year and have a target to raise at least £100,000 for our national partner charity, Mind, in the same period.

Policy Sustainable Development Goal: Decent Work and Economic Growth
What does it mean?:  Transparent management of our pay policies and reward structure A fair and responsible Tronc policy Ensuring that equal work means equal pay – eliminating both gender and ethnicity pay gaps Increasing availability of, and promoting training and recognised qualifications to our teams – thereby enabling our people to reach their personal and professional goals Reviewing all policies annually to ensure they remain relevant and reflect our values.

Ensuring that we have entirely robust policies when it comes to areas such as Modern Slavery and Anti Bribery Policy means accountability and we must hold ourselves to account for both our actions, and sometimes inaction. By creating a robust bank of policies that truly reflect NWTC values, we can ensure that we are practising what we preach and are making real positive change
