Back Yourself with Some Positive Thinking in Your World

Back Yourself with Some Positive Thinking in Your World

December 21st, 2018

NWTC is built up by a body of individuals; we pride ourselves on each unique person and what their unique personality brings to the company. In fact, one of our thoughts is “be yourself!” because ultimately you were hired by being you. We’re proud of you, you should be proud of yourself too.

One of the ways you can remain positive within yourself is through the practice and mastering of self-talk. Self-talk is something we all do day to day, whether you know it or not. It’s that little inner voice that tells you whether you can or can’t do something, it can be a self-reflection or self-judgment. Negative self-talk can be destructive in more ways than you’d think, as positive self-talk can be more beneficial. Learning to practice this form of positive thinking is just another way to keep you being your best self (you go, Glen Coco!).

So, what is negative self-talk? Well, it’s any time that your inner voice says; “I can’t do this”, “I’m so stupid”, “I’m not good enough” or maybe even things less obvious like; “I should be doing better” or “I shouldn’t be finding it this hard”. Whether said in your mind or out loud, saying these sorts of things about yourself can really put YOU down. Self-talk is very natural, so learning about its affects is important, as well as how to channel a little bit more positive thinking into your life.

Where negative self-talk can aid anxiety and even depression, it can also make you lose. You heard, by putting yourself down and saying you can’t do something your belief leads to you actually not being able to do it. Who knew?

Let’s take it back to the land of positivity. It can be hard, well actually nearly impossible, to be positive thinking all. the. time! But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give it a good try. Just turning self-talk slightly into something less mean or harsh on yourself can lead to a whole mind full of positivity. When you’re feeling low things such as “I can make it through the day!” or “well, it could be worse” can be a more positive way of talking to yourself. It is an optimistic approach to not feeling so hot, rather than making it worse by talking yourself down.

Positive self-talk can improve your health, how you perform, it can even help you get that job (if you’re yet to apply for a role with New World)! By telling yourself you can do something, you are talking positively to yourself and therefore filling yourself with confidence and self-belief. When you think optimistically, you are more likely to look for those positive opportunities to make a difference or get involved in more activities and remain ambitious. Your mind supports your drive!

Here are a couple tricks to get you going

  1. Having a little bit of anxiety is normal. You’re going to get nervous about things that mean a lot to you, whether that’s in work or normal life. Let’s take it back to school and you were nervous before doing a presentation or performance, this type of anxiety is normal and in your adult life still exists but is just manifested in other ways. So, try not to give yourself a hard time over it and, rather, accept those feelings and remember, what you’re feeling is natural (and we all feel it)!
  2. Challenge your negativity. So, when you're next at work and get asked to do something, rather than thinking “I’m so bad at this” think instead “I wouldn’t have been asked to do this if I was bad at it or wasn't capable of it” – turn that negativity into positivity, sunshine!
  3. Talk good to yourself! You would never sit and put your friend down or offer them less than all your love. You would always build them up and make them feel better, talk the same way as you would to them to yourself.
  4. Get on that positive self-talk train. Start thinking about ways you can turn a negative self-talk into something less aggressive and more loving. You can talk to other people to see their perspectives and learn about different ways of looking at things.
