What we got up to… Mental Health Awareness Week 2018

May 21st, 2018

Hospitality can be a highly pressurised industry; while maintaining with it a smiley and positive approach to service. This makes it easy to forget that everyone has their own unique journey and story, which isn't always visible on the outside. With perspectives around mental health fast-changing, we understand how integral it is to have an awareness of mental health, acknowledging that actually we all have it and everyone’s mental health is different just like our physical health.

This year for Mental Health Awareness Week, we made it our mission to educate and cultivate self-awareness amongst our New World teams. We centred our MHAW campaign around ‘Seven Days of the Rainbow’ and dedicated a day of the week to each colour of the rainbow, sharing  with it different tools to empower long-lasting positive mental health.

Red Monday = ‘Re-thinking...

Monday kick-started our campaign with a company-wide 10 mindful minutes. The day focused on stress, reinforcing the true power of their mind in stressful situations. “When you look at a field of Dandelions, you either see a hundred weeds or a thousand wishes”

Orange Tuesday = ‘On My Time’...

Emphasising the value of personal reflection, giving your mind a rest from life’s stresses and taking time for you, being in touch with your mind and body as one entity.

Yellow Wednesday = ‘Saying Yes’...

An inspiring message sharing the power of saying “YES” to new opportunities we might usually shy away from. We want to motivate our teams and encourage them to be adventurous in their everyday lives, to not hold back and open their minds to the uncapped potential of life.

Green Thursday = ‘Growth’...

Celebrating personal growth; our NWTC educational subsidies scheme offers financial support to team members taking on new skills from languages to musical instruments, we’ve even had individuals register for university courses in various fields which is fantastic! Read more on our training schemes here.

Blue Friday = ‘Be Brave’...

With the majority of our time spent at work, the importance of having a close relationship will our colleagues is essential. We encourage our teams to be brave, by having open and honest conversations with the people close to them… their team. Working together and being supportive of each other’s journey.

Indigo Saturday = ‘I believe in myself’...

“I believe in myself”... an encouraging statement to remind us to give the same love and attention to ourselves as we would to friends, family and even strangers. Indigo day was an eye-opener to practicing self-compassion in our daily lives.

Violet Sunday = ‘Volunteering’...

To inspire giving back to mankind and sharing the gifts we all possess. As part of working at NWTC, every team member has the opportunity to take an entire day to volunteer for a cause close to them…and get paid for it! From this, we hope our teams become positive role models in their local communities and work with charities that literally change people’s lives. Read more about our Charity work here.

Our Rainbow campaign has been an enlightening experience and has even inspired directors and individuals from across all teams to share their personal experiences. We are passionate about creating a culture that supports, cultivates and educates self-awareness, celebrating individuality and promoting happy working environments.

We’re proud to have partnered up with Hospitality Action and everyone in the company is able to reach out and contact specialists for confidential advice, support and assistance, anytime, whatever the problem!

Always remember "shared sorrow becomes half a sorrow. Shared joy becomes double joy"… so don’t be afraid to share your sorrow and your joy!
