Mental Health Awareness at New World

Mental Health Awareness at New World

New World Mental Health Ethos :

To support each individual of New World, by pioneering long term positive mental health through personal development and wellbeing education. For physical and mental exercise to be viewed with equal importance for a long healthy life.

...We are at the beginning of our journey as a company to make this a true reality in New World, for every person under our wing. But for us to truly support this, we need to look both into our communities, and back to the basics of mental health education for our teams.

The basics are the necessary starting point, since none of us were taught it in school alongside the usual biology classes!

So, what does basic training look like at New World? We call it Space Travel and our new handbook has just launched with our leaders and bright stars. Space Travel is quite simply 'flying through life to reach your amazing potential'. Identified as only possible with a keen eye on wellbeing (both physical and mental health…which are the Ying and Yang of the human condition!)

Our Space Travellers Handbook identifies the basics, but perhaps not previously educated facts on mental wellbeing; things like eating the right foods and being aware of the effects of the wrong things… like energy drinks which are the norm in this industry. Sleep and how our use of technology is inhibiting healthy bed times, exercise and all the fun ways to bring it in to busy lives. Even down to staying hydrated, and what caffeine does to hydration levels. SO yes… the basics. But without thinking of these, without placing these as our “go to” guidelines, will we ever truly fulfil our ethos? Space Travel is the A-B in the coming alphabet of our mental health support strategy for our teams.

On to our communities… if we believe in our ethos (which we do) then there is an obvious thought… mental health education SHOULD start in schools! This year we have partnered with an amazing organisation Edge Inclusion. Their programme Mind Mechanics enables implementation of self-management strategies and techniques to deal with emotional regulation. In plain English… they teach kids about brains. They teach kids about thoughts, and what they are, and that they don’t have to listen to every thought. As they are just that… thoughts.

They teach them techniques to manage their thoughts and feelings, both as preventative and therapeutic for young people dealing with troubling experiences or mental health struggles.

They are empowering the next generation to stand tall, filled with confidence and self-compassion!

How refreshing! Oh, just think of how the next generation could move forward into their futures without days full of those nonsensical, self-deprecating kind of thoughts.

As with many other people in our world, our wellbeing journey is just beginning. We need to truly change the face of wellbeing and make the term “mental health” the norm, to allow the next generation to grow up supported, knowing the answers are within them.

For the revolution to happen all organisations need to pioneer wellbeing policies.

We could share facts and figures about the rise in depression and anxiety, we could go on, but we will only say this:   Support yourself, support those you know, and support those you don’t know.   Then we can really change our futures, for the kids, and (selfishly) for the next amazing bunch of Space Travellers who join our crew!
