Barnardo’s “My Planet” Day with NWTC

Barnardo’s “My Planet” Day with NWTC

September 26th, 2017

Many of us have grown up fortunate enough to start our day with a warm and welcoming “morning” from loved ones, followed by breakfast and a day filled with potential and opportunity. However, concepts associated with childhood like stability and support, or fun and play, can be alien to a lot of kids around the UK.

For approximately 700,000 young carers in the UK, their days begin a little differently. From a very early age, these kids must adapt and pick up practical skills like cooking, housework, caring for loved one’s physical needs and even administering medicines. A carer’s day may even be solely consumed by providing extensive emotional support or helping their relative communicate and in turn effects their academic attainment, social life and self-esteem.

For young carers, the demands can be debilitating to their confidence and many can be restricted by their responsibilities. At New World Trading Co we believe that you can’t see the brightness of stars without the darkness of night and where possible we aim to provide each child with the opportunity to develop their own self-belief and instil an optimistic outlook, regardless of circumstance.

We have once again teamed up with our extended family, Barnardo’s, to spread a little magic back into these children’s lives!

On Thursday 31st August, we hosted a fun filled day at the Botanist in Leeds, where we welcomed lots of bright and brilliant kids from the Willow Project to join us for some arts, crafts and imagination inspiration! Our mission was to give the kids a platform to express themselves, get creative and HAVE FUN.  The inspiring staff at the Willow project in Leeds support around 100 children through their services; from volunteering and helping families in need to organising fundraisers that provide these young carers with optimism and opportunity.

The outdoor dining area of The Botanist Leeds was transformed into a vibrant intergalactic art studio; accommodating twenty of Willow’s young carers aged 5-12 in order to mingle with other kids and get slightly messy. We provided an array of materials from Styrofoam balls, old CD’ to paints and biodegradable glitters that included every colour of the rainbow so they could assemble their own makeshift planets!

After a morning of artistry and imagination, our energetic troop were treated to a well-earned lunch of their choice, which was followed by some creative writing that gave our young carers a chance to make a profile explaining the inspiration for their planet. These events are designed for respite, so a few hours out of their normal responsible day to day to simply have some fun, be inspired by their own creativity and send them home with a reminder of their own awesomeness!

Supporting bright futures for all, no matter what the background is a philosophy we admire Barnardo’s for, and find such synergy with. Belief in young people is essential to their own future happiness and success, our events are designed to support this development. We hope one day they will be walking through our doors, big confident smiles on their faces, CV’s in hand and ready to fly!

We are looking forward to hosting some more events in the very near future! So, watch this space….
